What is NTSE?

NTSE stand for The National Talent Search Examination. It is a national level scholarship program in India and conducted by NCERT. National Talent Search Examination extracts the talent and intellectual levels of students. NTSE Exam is exclusively organized for the student of class X of any board. Students need to require a basic and conceptual knowledge of subject such as Science, Social Science, Medicine, Law and Management. It offers and helps such talented student by providing financial assistance to qualified students to fulfill their dream of further study in the field of science & technology and Research in it.

There are two stages for NTSE examination:

  • Stage-I: - It is the state-level exam which is generally held in November.
  • Stage–II: - It is the national-level exam is conducted generally in month of May.

Candidates who clear stage-I are qualified to attempt in the stage-II examination. Students who are studying overseas can directly appear for NTSE second stage.


Syllabus for NTSE examination consists of has two tests. The Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Syllabus for these two sections is as below:

Mental Ability Test is based on all fundament lesson of verbal and non-verbal, reasoning, General knowledge. Mental ability includes chapters like Direction Sense, Ranking,arrangement, etc. verbal and non-verbal is based on English language.

Scholastic Aptitude Test is based on subjects like Science, and Social Science as per study material of class IX and X.

  • 1) Mathematics: It includes all mathematics chapters like Percentage, Square Root, Cube Root, Surface Areas, and Volumes, etc.
  • 2) Science: It includes micro-organism, Food Production & Management, Structure of Atom, etc.
  • 3) Social Science: It includes social science chapters like Local & State Government, International Agencies, etc.

Paper Style

Paper Style for NTSE examination is based on multiple choice questions and students can score one mark for each correct answer.

There are two tests for NTSE Examination is as follow:

  • For Class-4:

    Patterns, Alphabet Test, Coding-Decoding, Mirror Images, Embedded Figures , Geometrical Shapes and Solids, Ranking Test, Direction Sense Test, Days and Dates & Possible Combinations , Analogy and Classification.

  • For Class-5:

Stage-III: It comprises of Achievers Section.

  • For Class-1 to 10: Higher Order Thinking Questions

How to prepare for Olympiads?

1) Make a plan and Start preparation at least two months before:

  • You should collect all necessary curriculum books and study material before start practicing the exam. Cover the entire topics which are important for Olympiad exam and start preparation before at least two months before.

2) Collect some sample paper of last year’s and Practice from that:

  • From Last year’s paper you can understand the paper style and which type of questions asked? So, accordingly last year’s Olympiad paper you will get basic understanding about exam and you can set time according to question. It will most help for preparation of Olympiad Exam.
